Pete Seeger (1919-2014) was an American folk singer and social activist. He was a key figure in the mid-20th century American folk music revival and is best known for his work with the band The Weavers, which had a number of hit songs, including “Goodnight, Irene” and “On Top of Old Smoky.” He also wrote a number of classic songs, such as “If I Had a Hammer” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?”

Some of Seeger's most well-known and acclaimed albums are The Essential Pete Seeger (1996), Pete Seeger at Carnegie Hall (1963), and American Favorite Ballads (1959). Some of his most popular songs include “We Shall Overcome”, “Turn! Turn! Turn!”, “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” and “If I Had a Hammer.”

An interesting fact about Pete Seeger is that he was blacklisted during the McCarthy era and was unable to perform on television for many years. He was also a long-time member of the Communist Party USA and a vocal advocate of civil rights, labor rights, and environmentalism.
