Pete Rock, also known as Peter Phillips, is a hip-hop producer, DJ, and rapper from New York City. He first rose to prominence in the early 1990s with his production work on the classic albums "Mecca and the Soul Brother" and "The Main Ingredient" by Pete Rock & CL Smooth. His production style is characterized by heavy sampling of soul, funk, and jazz samples, combined with hard drums and often chopped up vocal samples.

Some of his standout albums include Mecca and the Soul Brother (1992), The Main Ingredient (1994), Soul Survivor (1998), and Petestrumentals (2001). Notable songs include "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" (1992), "Take You There" (1996), and "Tru Master" (1998).

An interesting fact about Pete Rock is that he is one of the first producers to sample a record from its entirety, as opposed to just using samples of the original song. He did this for his track "T.R.O.Y.", which sampled the entire song "Today" by the group The Winstons.
