Pere Ubu is an American rock band formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1975 by vocalist David Thomas, guitarist Tom Herman, bassist Tim Wright, keyboardist Allen Ravenstine, and drummer Scott Krauss. The group has had numerous lineup changes over the years, but the core members have remained Thomas, Ravenstine, and Krauss.

Pere Ubu's earliest releases were highly experimental, drawing heavily on elements of punk, art rock, and psychedelia. They released their debut single, “30 Seconds Over Tokyo”, in 1975, and their debut album, The Modern Dance, in 1978. This album featured the songs “Final Solution” and “Non-Alignment Pact”, which remain staples of the band’s live shows.

The band’s most acclaimed work is their 1980 album, Dub Housing. This album was more song-oriented than their earlier material, and featured the songs “The Book Is On The Table” and “Heaven”. Pere Ubu continued to release acclaimed albums throughout the 80s and 90s, such as The Art of Walking (1980), Song of the Bailing Man (1983), Cloudland (1989), and Worlds in Collision (1991).

Pere Ubu have continued to release music into the 21st century, most recently with their 2020 album, Long Live Pere Ubu!. The band also continues to tour extensively, performing their classic material as well as new songs.

An interesting fact about Pere Ubu is that their name was taken from the title of a play by French playwright Alfred Jarry. The play, Ubu Roi, was a parody of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and featured an absurdist character named Pere Ubu.
