Norman Del Mar
Norman Del Mar (1914-1994) was a British conductor and composer who specialized in the works of British composers. He was most renowned for his recordings of Edward Elgar, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst, among others. He was a member of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, where he served as principal conductor from 1957 to 1959, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, where he was principal guest conductor from 1962 to 1965.
Del Mar's most acclaimed albums include: Elgar: Enigma Variations, Vaughan Williams: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 8, Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 6, and Holst: The Planets. His standout recordings include Elgar's Enigma Variations and Vaughan Williams' Symphony No. 6 (A Pastoral Symphony).
An interesting fact about Del Mar is that he was an avid collector of vintage gramophones and records, and had a collection of more than 5,000 records.
