Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (27 May 1946 – 19 April 2005) was a Danish jazz double bassist. He is widely considered one of the greatest jazz bassists of all time. Pedersen started playing the bass at the age of nine, studying classical music and jazz, and later began performing professionally. Pedersen released over 60 albums, many of which are considered classics of the genre. Notable albums include The Trio (1975) with pianist Kenny Drew and drummer Alex Riel, Double Bass (1975) with guitarist Svend Asmussen, Danish Ballads & More (1996) with guitarist Ulf Wakenius, and The Art of the Duo (2003) with pianist Hank Jones. He also collaborated with a number of prominent jazz musicians, including John Scofield, Dexter Gordon, and Stephane Grappelli. Pedersen was known for his fluid, melodic playing style, and was considered a master of the walking bass line. He often used his bass to imitate the sound of a string orchestra, and was able to create complex harmonic structures. An interesting fact about Pedersen is that he won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance in 2004 for the album The Art of the Duo, making him the only Danish musician to win a Grammy.
