Yamaguchi began her career as a teen idol, releasing her debut single "Koibito yo" in 1977. She released her first album, Momoe Yamaguchi, in 1978, which was an instant success. Other standout albums include Watashi to Watashi (1979) and Dream (1980). Her singles "Akai Sweet Pea" and "Koi Hitoyo" were both hits in Japan and made her an iconic figure in the music industry.

Yamaguchi's most successful single was "Saraba Itoshiki Hito yo" (Farewell, Beloved One), which was released in 1979 and sold over two million copies in Japan.
