Merle Haggard was an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler who rose to prominence in the 1960s and 70s. Born in Oildale, California, Haggard learned to play guitar and sing at an early age, eventually making his way to Bakersfield, California, where he became a central figure in the local honky-tonk scene. Haggard released dozens of albums throughout his career, beginning with his debut album Strangers in 1965. He released a steady stream of albums over the next several decades, including such classic titles as Swinging Doors (1966), Mama Tried (1968), and If We Make It Through December (1973). His signature songs include “Okie from Muskogee” (1969), “The Fightin’ Side of Me” (1970), and “Mama Tried” (1968). He also wrote and recorded several songs about the life of a working-class American, including “Workin’ Man Blues” (1969) and “I’m a Lonesome Fugitive” (1967).

An interesting fact about Merle Haggard is that he was posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.
