Melanie is an American singer-songwriter and actress best known for her hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including "Brand New Key" and "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)". She has released more than twenty studio albums, with her most recent being a live album released in 2019.

Melanie's breakout album, 1969's "Affectionately Melanie", featured the hit single "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)", which reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album also included "Beautiful People" and "What Have They Done To My Song Ma". Her 1970 album, "Candles In The Rain", featured her most popular hit, "Brand New Key".

Melanie was a prominent voice in the anti-war movement in the early 1970s, and her songs often featured social commentary. Her song "Peace Will Come (According to Plan)" was featured on the soundtrack to the 1973 film, "Alice's Restaurant".

An interesting fact about Melanie is that she was the first artist to perform at the original Woodstock Festival in 1969. She was the only artist who performed solo, and her performance was so successful that she was given an encore at the end of the festival.
