The Mahavishnu Orchestra was an influential jazz-rock fusion group formed in 1971 by guitarist John McLaughlin. The group was notable for blending rock and jazz elements into their sound, and for their technically demanding and virtuosic playing. The original lineup featured McLaughlin on guitar, Jan Hammer on keyboards, Jerry Goodman on violin, Rick Laird on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums.

The Mahavishnu Orchestra released three studio albums during their career, with the first two being the most popular. The group's 1971 debut, The Inner Mounting Flame, is considered one of the pioneering works of the jazz-rock fusion genre and features some of the group's most popular songs, such as "Meeting of the Spirits," "The Dance of Maya," and "You Know You Know." Their second album, Birds of Fire (1973), is a more musically complex work, with extended instrumental solos and more advanced musical arrangements. Standout tracks include "Miles Beyond," "Open Country Joy," and "The Eternal Ganga."

The Mahavishnu Orchestra also released a live album, Between Nothingness & Eternity (1973), which contains some of the group's longest and most ambitious performances. The album features an extended, 22-minute version of "Meeting of the Spirits."

An interesting fact about the Mahavishnu Orchestra is that it was a major influence on progressive rock, and many of the group's songs have been covered by other musicians.
