    East Broadway Run Down is a striking Sonny Rollins album that captures the saxophonist pushing beyond hard bop into freer, more open-ended improvisation. Recorded in 1966 and issued in 1967, it features Rollins with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones, a quartet that gives the music both harmonic tension and rhythmic drive. The title track is a lengthy, exploratory statement, while the programme also reframes standards such as We Kiss in a Shadow with restless invention. Widely regarded as one of Rollins’ more adventurous 1960s releases, the album shows him testing form without losing his unmistakable tone and authority.
