Multi-media performer and composer from Chicago, born in '47, who made her name in the New York avant-garde scene. Draws on the experiments of the Dadaists and Surrealists of the 1930s and the happenings of the 1960s.
Scored a novelty hit in '81 with O Superman from BIG SCIENCE. In her best-known performance Lilted States I-IV, a vocoder (voice modifier), music and images form a whole. Although from MISTER HEARTBREAK onwards she tended towards a more pop-tinted direction, her music retains visionary power with a sense of experimentation.
BRIGHT RED was produced by Brian Eno. THE UGLY ONE WITH THE JEWELS AND OTHER STORIES and LIVE AT TOWN HALL, NEW YORK CITY, SEPTEMBER 19-20, 2001 are live. On the impressive LIFE ON A STRING that contains three songs from the theatre production Songs And Stoles From Moby Dick, she collaborates with Hal Willner (see PRODUCERS), Bill Frisell, Van Dyke Parks and her partner Lou Reed.
