John Sebastian is an American singer-songwriter, best known for his 1960s hits with The Lovin' Spoonful, including "Do You Believe in Magic," "Daydream" and "Summer in the City." Born in 1944 in New York City, Sebastian grew up in a musical family. His father was a noted classical harmonica player and composer, while his mother was a radio scriptwriter.

The Lovin' Spoonful was one of the most successful folk-rock groups of the 1960s, and John Sebastian was the leader of the band. The group released five studio albums, including the 1966 chart-topper, "Daydream," which featured "Do You Believe in Magic." The band also released several successful singles, including "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind" and "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice."

John Sebastian's solo career began in the 1970s with the release of his self-titled debut album, which featured the hit single "Welcome Back." Other standout solo albums include 1971's Tarzana Kid, 1975's Cheapo-Cheapo Productions Presents Real Live John Sebastian and 1976's Welcome Back.

An interesting fact about John Sebastian is that he wrote the theme song for the 1970s TV sitcom "Welcome Back, Kotter," which was performed by the show's cast. He also appeared in the show several times, including a season four episode in which he plays a folk-singing garbage man.
