Jaap Schröder is a Dutch composer and violinist, born in The Hague in 1936. He is best known for his improvisational performances and recordings in the field of early music. Schröder's career began in the 1960s as a member of the Dutch classical music ensemble Musica Antica da Camera.
His standout albums include the 1976 release La Sonnerie de Sainte-Geneviève du Mont, a recording of French Baroque music, and the 1981 release Cantigas de Santa Maria, a recording of Spanish Medieval music. His more recent works include 2014's Chaconnes, a collection of baroque chaconnes and passacaglias, and 2018's Lamenti, a recording of 16th century Italian laments.
One of Schröder's most popular songs is "Ciaccona" from the 1976 album La Sonnerie de Sainte-Geneviève du Mont. This piece, composed by François Couperin, is one of Schröder's most recognizable pieces and is often performed in live concerts.
An interesting fact about Schröder is that he is an avid collector of antique musical instruments, including violins, violas, and cellos. He has a large collection of instruments dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries which he uses in his performances.
