Gundula Janowitz is a German operatic soprano who has enjoyed an illustrious career spanning more than five decades. Born in 1935 in Vienna, she began her professional career in the early 1960s and is best known for her performances of works by Mozart, Wagner, and Strauss. She has made a number of acclaimed recordings, including Bach's St. John Passion (1966), Bach's Mass in B Minor (1967), Mozart's Requiem (1969), and Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier (1970). Janowitz has also recorded the works of contemporary composers, including those of Luciano Berio, Hans Werner Henze, and Luigi Nono.

Her standout albums include Bach: Mass in B Minor, BWV 232 (1967) and Mozart: Requiem (1969). Notable songs include Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier and "Exsultate, Jubilate", a motet composed by Mozart.

An interesting fact about Gundula Janowitz is that she was the first soprano to perform the role of the Marschallin in Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier at the Vienna State Opera.
