George Shearing (1919–2011) was an English jazz pianist, composer and bandleader. He is best known for his work in the jazz quintet format, with which he had a long career. He was born in London, England, to working-class parents and was blind from birth.

Shearing's career began in the late 1930s, when he performed with a number of popular British dance bands. He moved to the United States in 1947, and shortly after arriving, he formed the George Shearing Quintet. The quintet featured Shearing on piano, accompanied by a vibraphone, guitar, bass and drums. This quintet would become the signature sound of Shearing's career, and the format would be used on some of his most famous albums.

Some of Shearing's most notable albums include Lullaby of Birdland (1952), Latin Affair (1955), and Softly (1961). His most famous songs include "Lullaby of Birdland," "September in the Rain," and "Mambo Inn."

An interesting fact about George Shearing is that he was the first jazz musician to have a number one hit on the US pop charts, with his song "The Boy from Ipanema" in 1965.
