Georg Solti was a Hungarian-born conductor, pianist, and composer who was considered one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. Solti began his musical career as a pianist before turning to conducting in the 1930s. He worked with the Frankfurt Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, among others, and was the first non-British conductor to be appointed music director of the Royal Opera House in London. He was the first conductor to receive the Grammy Award for Best Classical Album and was the recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the Grammy Awards.
Soltiβs most notable albums include his recording of Wagnerβs Der Ring des Nibelungen, which won the Grammy Award for Best Classical Album in 1967, and Beethovenβs Symphonies Nos. 5 and 7, which won the Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance in 1971. Other notable works include his recordings of Mozartβs Don Giovanni, Stravinskyβs Petrushka, and Tchaikovskyβs Symphony No. 6, as well as his recording of Verdiβs Requiem.
An interesting fact about Georg Solti is that he was the first conductor to make a complete studio recording of Wagnerβs Ring Cycle. He recorded the cycle in 1966 for Decca Records, and the recording took over 500 hours of studio time.
