Gary Shearston is an Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who rose to prominence in the 1970s. Born in Sydney in 1945, Shearston's career began in the early 1960s as a guitarist, vocalist and harmonica player in the band The Split Ends. He released his debut solo album, A Bird in the Hand, in 1972, which featured covers of classic songs such as "Maggie May" and "This Little Light of Mine."

His second album, It's All Happening Now, released in 1974, featured his first original compositions, including the hits "I Get a Kick Out of You" and "The Boy from the Sun." He achieved further success with his third album, Now Listen, which included the classic single "I'm a Singer."

Shearston's other albums include 1985's The Best of Gary Shearston, 1990's Homegrown and 2000's Between Friends.

An interesting fact about Shearston is that he was the first artist to record "I Still Call Australia Home," which has become an unofficial Australian national anthem. He recorded it for his debut album in 1972.
