The band consisted of Gary Puckett (vocals), Dwight Bement (keyboards), Gary "Mutha" Withem (bass), Kerry Chater (guitar), and Paul Wheatbread (drums). They had a string of hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including "Young Girl", "Lady Willpower", and "Over You".

The band's 1968 debut album, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap Featuring Gary Puckett, was a hit, reaching number 5 on the Billboard 200 chart. Their second album, Incredible, was released in 1969 and reached number 16 on the Billboard 200 chart. The band's third album, Young Girl, was released in 1970 and was the group's highest-charting album, reaching number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart.
