Dory Previn (October 23, 1925 – February 14, 2012) was an American singer-songwriter, poet, and lyricist. Born as Dorothy Veronica Langan, she began her career as a lyricist for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, writing the lyrics to over 200 songs for films such as “Que Sera, Sera” from The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956). She later branched out into songwriting, and her most successful album, Mythical Kings and Iguanas (1971), was released by United Artists and was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Dory Previn's most acclaimed albums are Mythical Kings and Iguanas (1971) and Reflections in a Mud Puddle (1972). Mythical Kings and Iguanas was Previn's first solo album and includes the songs “Beware of Young Girls” and “Mourning Glory Story”. Reflections in a Mud Puddle includes the song “With My Daddy in the Attic”, which was based on her own traumatic childhood.

In addition to her musical career, Previn was also a successful poet and novelist. Her novel, Marya: A Life (1986), was adapted into a play and was performed in London’s West End.

An interesting fact about Dory Previn is that she was the first female songwriter to be signed to the publishing arm of United Artists. She was also one of the first female singer-songwriters to achieve success in the pop music industry.
