Dirty Three Vinyl Records

Dirty Three is an Australian instrumental rock band from Melbourne, Victoria, formed in 1992. The band consists of founding members Warren Ellis (violin, piano, bouzouki, tenor guitar, harmonica, backing vocals), Mick Turner (guitar, piano, backing vocals) and Jim White (drums, percussion, backing vocals).

Dirty Three's early work was a combination of improvisation, blues and folk. They became known for their slow-burning and intense live performances, and their albums often reflect the same energy. Their first full-length album, Dirty Three, was released in 1995 and was followed by their breakthrough album, Horse Stories, in 1997. The album featured the standout track ‘Rue the Whirl’, which was used in the soundtrack to the 2003 film, The Girl with the Pearl Earring.

Since then, the band has released a number of critically acclaimed albums, including Ocean Songs (1998), Whatever You Love You Are (2000), Cinder (2003), She Has No Strings Apollo (2005), and Toward the Low Sun (2012).

An interesting fact about Dirty Three is that their name is derived from a misheard lyric in the Lou Reed song ‘Romeo Had Juliette’. The lyric is actually “dirty story” but Warren Ellis heard it as “dirty three”.
