Deep Purple is an English rock band that was formed in Hertford, England in 1968. The original lineup consisted of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, singer Rod Evans, bassist Nick Simper, keyboardist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice. The band rose to prominence in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and is considered one of the pioneers of heavy metal and hard rock music.

Deep Purple's most popular albums include their 1970 release, In Rock, which featured their classic song "Smoke on the Water," as well as 1972's Machine Head and 1973's Who Do We Think We Are. Other standout songs by the band include "Highway Star," "Space Truckin'," "Hush," "Burn" and "Child in Time."

An interesting fact about Deep Purple is that they were the first ever rock band to have a concert in the Soviet Union, in 1971. This was an important event in the history of rock music in the Soviet Union, as it opened the door for other rock bands to follow.
