Clifford Brown and Max Roach were two of the most influential jazz musicians of the 1950s. They formed a quintet in 1954, consisting of Brown on trumpet, Roach on drums, Richie Powell on piano, George Morrow on bass, and Harold Land on saxophone. Their first album, Clifford Brown & Max Roach, was released in 1954 and featured the now-classic tracks "Cherokee" and "Joy Spring".

The quintet went on to release several more acclaimed albums, including Study in Brown (1955), Clifford Brown & Max Roach at Basin Street (1956), and Jazz at Massey Hall (1953). Some of their most memorable songs include "Tenderly", "Parisian Thoroughfare", "Joy Spring", and "Cherokee".

An interesting fact about Clifford Brown and Max Roach is that they were both accomplished classical musicians, as well as jazz musicians. Both studied classical music at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. Brown even won a scholarship to Juilliard at the age of 15.
