Charles Lloyd is an American jazz saxophonist and composer who has had a prolific career spanning five decades. He was born in 1938 in Memphis, Tennessee and grew up in a musical family. He began playing saxophone as a child, and later studied at the University of Southern California. Lloyd's career began to take off in the late 1960s, when he joined the legendary jazz group The Great Jazz Trio. He then released his first solo album, Dream Weaver, in 1966, which featured some of his most iconic compositions. The album, which included the hit single "Forest Flower", earned Lloyd two Grammy nominations. Lloyd's subsequent albums and projects, including 1968's Discovery!, 1969's Waves, and 1975's Fish Out of Water, saw him exploring different genres and styles. He also collaborated with a variety of artists, including Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, and Billy Higgins. In the late 70s and early 80s, Lloyd moved away from jazz and began to focus on more contemporary styles of music. In the 2000s, Lloyd returned to jazz with a series of albums, including the critically acclaimed 2014 release, Wild Man Dance. His most recent album, Passin' Thru, was released in 2017. Some of Lloyd's most popular songs include "Dream Weaver", "Forest Flower", "Love Ship", and "Canto". An interesting fact about Charles Lloyd is that in 2008, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music.
