Carl Schuricht

Carl Schuricht (1880-1967) was a German conductor who is widely considered to be one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. He was the chief conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra from 1922 until his retirement in 1956.

Schuricht is especially renowned for his interpretations of works by Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and Mozart. He recorded many of their works for labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, EMI and Philips. Some of his standout albums include his recordings of Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 and Symphony No. 4, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, and Mozart’s Symphony No. 40.

An interesting fact about Schuricht is that he was the first conductor to perform a complete cycle of the Beethoven symphonies in one season, a feat which he accomplished with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in 1922.
