Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band Vinyl Records

The Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band is an Australian blues, jazz and roots music band formed in Melbourne in 1972. The original line-up consisted of harmonicist and vocalist Mic Conway, his brother Jim Conway on washboard, clarinetist and saxophonist John Baxter, banjoist Michael Barclay, bassist and vocalist Peter Blaxter, and drummer Ted Vining.

The group's first album, Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band (1973), was their most successful, reaching the top 10 in the Australian charts and spawning their biggest hit, "My Name is Jim". Their second album, Smokes & Magnolias (1974), included their cover of the traditional tune "Rock Island Line". Other standout albums include Diggin' Up Bones (1975), Hot Pancakes (1976) and Waxworks (1978).

An interesting fact about the band is that they were one of the first acts signed to Mushroom Records in 1972, the first independent label in Australia.
