Bobbie Gentry is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer best known for her 1967 hit “Ode to Billie Joe”. Born Roberta Lee Streeter in 1944 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, Gentry began her career performing in clubs and on local radio in the early 1960s. Gentry’s debut album, Ode to Billie Joe, released in 1967, was her most successful and contains her signature song “Ode to Billie Joe”. The album was certified gold and earned her three Grammy nominations. Gentry’s other albums include The Delta Sweete (1968), Touch ‘Em with Love (1969), and Fancy (1970). Some of Gentry’s other notable songs include “Fancy”, “Reunion”, “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again”, “Papa, Won’t You Let Me Go To Town With You”, and “I Saw An Angel Die”. An interesting fact about Gentry is that she is the first female artist to receive the Academy of Country Music’s “Entertainer of the Year” award in 1970.
