Jazz changed course in 1959 as modal playing, unusual time signatures and freer composition opened new possibilities; bossa nova also began reaching wider audiences. Albums that help explain 1959 include Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Mingus Ah Um by Charles Mingus and Chega de Saudade by João Gilberto.
Few years show jazz changing so clearly. Kind of Blue simplified harmony, Time Out challenged standard metre, Mingus Ah Um revisited jazz history, and Chega de Saudade helped establish bossa nova.
