Albums First Released in 1970

The new decade opened with heavier rock, electric jazz and singer-songwriter albums built for close listening. Standout albums from 1970 include Paranoid by Black Sabbath, Moondance by Van Morrison, Bitches Brew by Miles Davis and Tea for the Tillerman by Cat Stevens.

Heavy metal took a recognisable form, jazz fusion became harder to ignore and solo artists gained more space after the break-up of major 1960s bands. The year opened clear paths into the rest of the 1970s.

Our Pick of the Year: Paranoid by Black Sabbath

Paranoid gave heavy metal a clear public shape. War Pigs, Iron Man and the title track combine Tony Iommi's low, direct riffs with lyrics about war, fear and alienation. The album is concise enough for newcomers, but its sound still explains why so many later rock and metal bands trace a line back to Black Sabbath.
