In September 1979, after the Sugarhill Gang put the rhythmically-consummated speech song to beats from the backyards of Harlem and the Bronx into the limelight with the megahit "Rapper's Delight", countless artists and producers tried to do the same to the charming trio. By the end of the year around 30 more hip-hop singles had been released, all from small New York independent labelsThis is exactly where the second part of the "Boombox" series starts. The compilation follows the break that African-American pioneer DJs like Kool Herc, DJ Hollywood, Grandmaster Flash, Eddie Cheba and Afrika Bambaataa had made in the seventies with two turntables and breakbeats into the original jungle of disco, soul, blues and R'n 'B and presents acts of the second wave with Paul Winley, Peter Brown and Joe Robinson. They were among the first hip-hop artists to go into the studio and record their raps on vinylAs is typical for soul jazz, the release is accompanied by a rich booklet with extensive and exclusive context material.
