Kenny Burrell's artistic development is well documented in his years with Oscar Peterson and his first dates as a bandleader on the Blue Note label, but "God Bless The Child", his only work for CTI 1971, is a little-heard masterpiece among his works. Burrell's band on these recordings include bassist Ron Carter, drummer Ray Barretto, Richard Wyands on piano, flutist Hubert Laws, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and drummer Billy CobhamCTI's house arranger, Don Sebesky, wrote the arrangements for the strings and conducted them in a way that strangely sets them apart from his other work for this label - Sebesky deliberately understood Burrell's simple guitar playing. Burrell wasn't one of the fusion musicians, but he could groove better than all of them together. Sebesky created a gloomy, atmospheric background noise backdrop, impressionistic on the one hand, on the other hand giving glamour to the musician, who could dig himself into it and dissect it - like in his own compositions "Love Is the Answer" and "Do What You Gotta Do" - but on the other hand also gently and tenderly caress it like in the title track, the really great "Be Yourself" and Thad Jones' "A Child Is Born". Here you can hear Burrell in absolute top form as a musician, composer and bandleader. Great, great, great!
