  • Recorded in two days in the summer of 1967, "Nefertiti" is Miles Davis' last all-acoustic album, with no compositions by Miles himself. Most of the tracks were written by Wayne Shorter & Herbie Hancock. The album is best known for the unusual title track, where the horns repeat the melody and the rhythm section improvises (instead of the other way around). Although an acoustic album, it signals Miles' transition from bop to jazz fusion; a reference to the next albums, Miles in the Sky and the critically acclaimed In A Silent Way. Rhythm section: Tony Williams & Ron Carter

In 1968 the last purely acoustic album of the second Miles Davis Quintet was released. "Nefertiti" is thereby a quiet album of subtle nuances, in which the musicians listen to each other wonderfully, but are still committed to the tradition of Hard Bob. Jazz connoisseurs describe this album as the last and also necessary step Davis had to take before he could devote himself to fusion jazz. It features Miles Davis on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums.

The MFSL Re-Issue spreads the six tracks of this album generously over four record sides of 180g-thick vinyl that wants to be played at 45rpm. The analogue editing was handled by Krieg Wunderlich on the Gain2 system in Sebastopol, and you can hear the calmness from which the music emerges better than on any previous version
