Bonny Light Horseman – Bonny Light Horseman

Bonny Light Horseman is a new indie-folk supergroup consisting of Anaïs Mitchell (vocals), Fruit Bats mastermind Eric Johnson, and producer and multi-instrumentalist Josh Kaufman (known for his work with The War On Drugs and The National, among others) The band debuted at the 2019 Newport Folk Festival and unveiled their eponymous debut single featuring Aaron Dessner of The National on guitar back last July. The trio is releasing their debut album on 37d03d Records (read: People Records), a new label from Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and the Dessner brothers. The latter invited the musicians to the German capital in the summer of 2018 to participate in a week-long artist residency at Berlin's Funkhaus. According to the band, 60 percent of the album was recorded there (the rest took place in January 2019 at Dreamland Studios in Woodstock, NY) The aim of the Bonny Light Horseman project is to reinterpret traditional folk songs from the British Isles. You can hear this for example on the excellent second single, "Deep In Love", which according to the band started as a Fruit Bats sketch "until Kaufman recognized its uncanny (and unplanned) similarity to a traditional tune by that name (it shares some lyrics with aly Waly' / The Water Is Wide'). What you hear is the first and only take of the song, recorded in the wee hours of a midwinter's night at Dreamland Studio in Woodstock, NY."
