  • As with life, there’s turbulence to be appreciated in Buñuel’s new album Killers Like Us. Unorthodox forces collide in hard rock harmony on this 10-track release recorded by an Italian trio of versatile musicians and avant-garde veteran vocalist Eugene S. Robinson (Oxbow).

Guitarist Xabier Iriondo, bassist Andrea Lombardini, and drummer Francesco Valente generate various moods through doom, alternative, noise, and punk arrangements. The bass is heavily distorted throughout, and the guitars chafe away in a super fuzzed assault, giving the record its unique crunch. While the threesome hacks and smooths away, Robinson delivers vocals in a manner of reciting poetry—ranting, meandering, howling, and occasionally hitting melodic notes.

“When God Used a Rope” is a song off Killers Like Us you’d file away in the “fun” folder. You can do some hardcore 1960s go-go dancing to its groovy commotion . Even though it is one of the lighter tracks on the album, it presents a heavy theme of humans being considered “failed animals” capable of “horrors … as ever present as our loves are endless.” (Robinson).
