  • "Singing Saw" is an album written and recorded for an orchestra. Kevin Morby deals with the fact that true beauty - deep and honest - requires an all-encompassing balance that does not hide our darker sides. The album is an album of duality; a further growth of this young, talented songwriter with the friendly face and complex mind.

Morby starts here with "Cut Me Down", a song of tears, debts and the vision of becoming nothing. "I Have Been To The Mountain", "Destroyer", and "Black Flowers" continue to explore the concepts of beauty and freedom, focusing on the doom that eats its way into life's supposedly safest precincts: peace, family, and romantic love.

Towards the end, Morby literally begs with "Water" to be extinguished forever, like a fire that turns all visions into rubble and ashes. The touching innocence of "Ferris Wheel" shows a captivating simplicity in the structural opulence of the whole album. This is where "Singing Saw" achieves its balance thanks to Morby's grace and pure joy of life.

In the end, Morby here fulfills the promise that many heard in his first two albums. The songs on "Singing Saw" reflect the clarity that comes from accepting change - and distils this insight into a whole new vision.
