Martin Denny was an American composer and pianist best known as the "father of exotica" music. His style of tropical-inspired lounge music combined jazz, exotica, and elements of Pacific Ocean culture. Denny's most popular album was 1959's Exotica, which spawned the hit single "Quiet Village" and is considered the first exotica album. Other notable albums include Exotic Moog (1970), Hypnotique (1962), and A Taste of India (1968). Denny was born in New York City in 1911 and learned to play the piano at an early age. He attended the University of Hawaii, where he became interested in Pacific music and culture. In the 1950s, he formed a group called Martin Denny's Exotica Sextet and began performing at clubs and lounges in Hawaii. His unique sound became popular and he soon released his debut album, Exotica, in 1959. Some of Denny's most popular songs include "Quiet Village," "Sim Sim," "My Little Grass Shack," and "Mauna Loa." In the 1960s, Denny performed on The Ed Sullivan Show and released several albums with his sextet. In the 1970s, Denny began to focus on his solo career, recording several albums, including A Taste of India and Exotic Moog. An interesting fact about Martin Denny is that he was credited with inventing the genre of exotica music. He combined elements of jazz, classical, and Pacific culture to create a unique and exotic sound that has since been emulated by many artists.
