Carlos Santana, John McLaughlin – Love Devotion Surrender (Speakers Corner)

In order to communicate their very different ways of reading and playing Tranes' music, the bosses formed a project band consisting of members of the Santana Troupe and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. In "Love Supreme" Santana's distorted melodic rolls merge with McLaughlin's high-pressure staccato to form a viscous drive. This approach works just as well in slow motion: liquid as it is inspired, the duo works on acoustic guitars to create the miniature, slowly clocked Coltrane composition "Naima".

Santana's handwriting sometimes jiggles through the arrangements with agitated conga mallets and as singing from a distance, looking inside at the partly spiritual but not puzzled sounds. At the latest in the broad gospel epic "Let Us Got Into The House" the followers of Santana's core albums find their Carlos and his time-delayed solos again. Thus, love and humility are not to be understood as a preservation of monuments, but as a devotion to oneself in its purest form.
