Major releases from 2014 include Black Messiah by D'Angelo and the Vanguard, Piñata by Freddie Gibbs and Madlib, 2014 Forest Hills Drive by J. Cole and Salad Days by Mac DeMarco.
D'Angelo returned with a dense band album, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib joined direct rapping with off-centre production, J. Cole made a self-contained personal record and Mac DeMarco refined laid-back guitar pop.
