As the Berlin Wall fell, alternative rock, hip hop and electronic music were already pointing towards the 1990s. Albums that help explain 1989 include The Stone Roses by The Stone Roses, Disintegration by The Cure, Doolittle by Pixies and 3 Feet High and Rising by De La Soul.
Manchester's indie and dance scenes began to overlap, the Cure made a dark album for a large audience, Pixies sharpened quiet-loud guitar dynamics and De La Soul expanded hip hop's palette with playful sampling.
