Albums First Released in 1974
Established artists looked beyond the dominant rock sounds of the early 1970s, while funk, jazz fusion and distinctly Australian songwriting gained ground. Among the defining albums released in 1974 were Living in the 70's by Skyhooks, Crime of the Century by Supertramp, On the Beach by Neil Young and Elis & Tom by Elis Regina and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Skyhooks wrote about Australian places and everyday life in a way local listeners immediately recognised. Elsewhere, Supertramp refined studio rock, Neil Young stripped it back and Elis Regina and Tom Jobim joined Brazilian song with jazz.

Our Pick of the Year: Living in the 70's by Skyhooks
Living in the 70's gave Australian rock a recognisable local setting. Greg Macainsh wrote about suburbs, nightlife and everyday places rather than borrowing American locations, while the band delivered the songs with glam-rock colour and sharp hooks. The album helped prove that Australian details could support a large national audience.
