    Juju is a landmark Wayne Shorter album, revealing him as one of jazz’s most distinctive composer-improvisers. Recorded in 1964 and released in 1965 on Blue Note, it features Shorter with McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman and Elvin Jones, a superb quartet that gave his writing exceptional depth and drive. The title piece, along with ‘Deluge’ and ‘House of Jade’, shows Shorter moving beyond hard bop conventions into darker harmonies, shifting forms and richly original melodic ideas. Widely regarded as one of his defining early statements, the album helped establish his reputation at the centre of modern jazz.
