Black And White is the album that established Tony Joe White as a singular voice in swamp pop and Southern blues. Released in 1969, it blends Delta and country blues with Memphis soul, rhythm and blues and folk influences into a terse, hypnotic sound built around White’s deep drawl and understated guitar work. The album’s best-known song, “Polk Salad Annie”, became his signature hit and helped define his raw, regional style for a wider audience.
