Psychocandy is the incendiary debut album that fused Sugarcubes-like pop hooks with sheets of distortion, redefining indie rock in the process. Released in 1985, The Jesus and Mary Chain turned short, melodic songs into a thrilling clash of sweetness and feedback, with producer John Loder helping capture its stark, confrontational sound. Just Like Honey became its signature moment, while the record’s stripped-down attack and melodic core made it a touchstone for noise rock and an important precursor to shoegaze. Fierce, elegant and influential, it remains one of the most important British alternative albums of the 1980s.
