    Fables Of The Reconstruction is one of R.E.M.’s most distinctive early albums, sharpening the band’s indie rock into something darker, stranger and more atmospheric. Released in 1985, it followed the breakthrough of Murmur and was recorded with producer Joe Boyd in London, a setting that added to its uneasy mood. Songs such as Feeling Gravitys Pull, Driver 8 and Can’t Get There From Here balance melodic clarity with brooding imagery, while the album’s Southern Gothic detail helped set R.E.M. apart from their contemporaries. It remains a key statement in the band’s evolution from college rock favourites to major alternative voices.
