About this album
Document is the album where R.E.M. sharpened their underground sound into a pointed, big-chorus statement. Released in 1987, it brought the Athens band’s alternative rock and pop sensibility into clearer focus, with Michael Stipe’s cryptic lyrics now joined by more direct political edge and a stronger sense of urgency. Produced by Don Gehman, the record includes breakthrough songs such as Finest Worksong, It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) and The One I Love, helping the band move from college-radio favourites to mainstream success without losing their identity. It remains one of the defining late-1980s rock albums.
