Automatic for the People is R.E.M.'s most celebrated and affecting album, a sombre but melodic statement that broadened the reach of alternative rock. Released in 1992, it followed the breakthrough of Out of Time and deepened the band’s reputation for emotional intelligence and elegant songwriting. Working with producer Scott Litt, R.E.M. paired acoustic textures, piano-led arrangements and understated orchestration with Michael Stipe’s cryptic, poignant lyrics. Songs such as Everybody Hurts, Man on the Moon and Nightswimming helped make the record one of the band’s most enduring successes, and it is widely regarded as a defining album of early 1990s rock.
