About this album
Nevermind is the album that turned Nirvana from underground favourites into the defining band of the grunge era. Released in 1991 and produced by Butch Vig, it balanced punk urgency with huge melodic hooks, giving songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are and Lithium an immediacy that broke alternative rock into the mainstream. Kurt Cobain’s writing captured frustration, alienation and bleak humour without losing its pop instinct, while the band’s raw but disciplined performance made the record sound both ferocious and strangely accessible. Its enormous commercial success and lasting influence made Nevermind one of the most important rock albums of the 1990s.
