10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 is one of Midnight Oil’s most powerful statements, tightening the band’s political urgency into hard-edged alternative rock. Released in 1982, the album brought Peter Garrett’s confrontational vocals and the group’s driving rhythm section into sharper focus, while songs such as Read About It, US Forces and Power and the Passion turned protest into memorable anthems. It marked a major step in the band’s rise from Australian cult act to internationally recognised firebrand, and helped define the sound and intent of politically charged rock in the decade that followed.
