Paul’s Boutique is the Beastie Boys’ boldest and most inventive album, a sample-saturated hip-hop landmark that has grown from commercial disappointment into a canonised classic. Released in 1989, it was made with the Dust Brothers and built from dense layers of breakbeats, funk, rock and obscure snippets that transformed the record into a kaleidoscopic collage. Songs such as Shake Your Rump, Hey Ladies and Shadrach show the group’s wit, chemistry and restless curiosity at full stretch. Widely regarded as one of rap’s great albums, it helped expand what hip-hop production could sound like and remains hugely influential.
