IDM (intelligent dance music) is a genre of electronic music that emerged in the early 1990s. It is characterized by complex and intricate beats, intricate melodies, and often includes samples from a variety of sources. IDM is often a hybrid of different genres such as techno, house, hip-hop, dub, ambient, and drum and bass. Its origins are often credited to the likes of Aphex Twin, Autechre, and other Warp Records acts, who helped define the genre in the 1990s.
