Cannonball Adderley was an American jazz alto saxophonist and bandleader. He was born Julian Edwin Adderley in Tampa, Florida on September 15, 1928. He started playing music at a young age and was playing professionally by the time he was 15. He joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and served for two years. During this time, he became exposed to bebop music, which would later heavily influence his own style of playing.
Adderley made a name for himself in the jazz world with his debut album, "Presenting Cannonball Adderley" (1955). His signature sound was a combination of soulful blues and hard bop jazz. His most successful album was "Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco" (1959), which featured the hit single "This Here". He later achieved crossover success with the hit single "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" (1967).
Adderley's other notable albums include "Cannonball & Coltrane" (1962), "Fiddler on the Roof" (1964), "Country Preacher" (1969), and "Cannonball & Company" (1975). His standout songs include "Sack O' Woe", "Work Song", "Them Dirty Blues", and "Walk Tall".
An interesting fact about Cannonball Adderley is that he was part of the first group of jazz musicians to perform at the White House in 1978. He was invited by President Jimmy Carter to perform for the occasion.
